Psychologist, counsellor or coach?

Our professionals are all licensed and registered psychologists, with at least 3 years of experience in clinical interviews. We privilege professionals that have completed the higher education cycle in psychotherapy or are enrolled in a specialisation school. Below is a description of the differences between the figures of the coach, the counsellor, and the psychologist:

Counsellor: counselling is currently a profession that is not regulated in Italy. The state does not indicate the minimum requirements necessary to exercise the practice. No specific norms apply nor is there a mandatory training course, much less the obligation for the professional to register with a professional register.

In this regulatory framework “anyone can define themselves as a counsellor or claim to exercise counselling”.

Coach: As for the counselling, coaching is also currently a non-regulated profession in Italy. The state does not indicate the minimum requirements necessary to exercise the practice. No specific norms apply nor is there a mandatory training course, much less the obligation for the professional to register with a professional register. In this regulatory framework “anyone can define themselves as a coach”.

Psychologist: For this profession the mandatory elements are; a degree in Psychology from an Italian university, a one-year Internship carried out under the supervision of a professional tutor enrolled in the National Order of Italian Psychologists and the successful passing of the state exam which allows enrollment in the Register of Psychologists, also mandatory for practising. This qualification allows the psychologist to intervene on affective, relational and social problems, both in developmental age (childhood and adolescence), and in adulthood (individual, couple, group or family). The psychologist can make diagnoses, evaluations, preventive interventions, but he does not “cure” nor prescribe drugs. Psychologists use the relationship, listening, empathy, and speech, as tools, using them according to specific techniques based on fundamental theories to which the professionals refer to.

What does psychological consultation mean?

Tconsulta offers “short term” evidence-based consultations, meaning that the effectiveness of these has been documented in the field’s literature. Many researches have demonstrated that finite interventions (3-5 sessions) result effective in treating a wide array of problematics, such as anxiety, insomnia and scarce motivation The objective of the assistance is therefore that of working with a psychologist on the origins of the uneasiness to understand and learn new coping and management abilities and strategies. The objective is that of facing daily stress and anxieties in a new and creative manner, across all contexts (work, family, relationships etc.)

Will my employer or my colleagues know if I use Tconsulta’s service?

What kind of self-assessment tools can I find within the Tconsulta platform?

The PGWBI is one of the self-assessment tests you can take within the platform. It is the Psychological General Well-Being Index, a tool for measuring and assessing subjective psychological well-being. The PGWBI questionnaire is widely used to measure the level of a person’s quality of life. The result of the questionnaire is a score ranging from 0-10 and can give you an orientation on your state of well-being. After the first three sessions with a psychologist you can retake the PGWBI and monitor the progress of your level of well-being.

How to interpret the results of the self-assessment tests?

Test results are interpreted on the basis of existing validation data, i.e. by comparing the score obtained with that of the Italian reference population. You will then be able to visualize the score obtained by ranking it within a high, medium, or low band, with a description of the meaning of the score and a generic indication as to whether and how to intervene to improve your score.

How were the self-assessment tests developed?

The self-assessment tests are tests that have already been widely used within the scientific community, developed by international psychology researchers and translated and validated in Italian. The main test you will find is the PGWBI, but you will also find more targeted tests on specific areas of the individual’s functioning, developed by Carol Ryff (2014) in line with her theory on psychological well-being.

What are self-assessment tests used for?

Self-assessment tests are a way to monitor the evolution of an individual’s well-being over time and to understand which areas may need further improvement.
